PSA vs CGC vs BGS vs ACE: Which Grading Service Is Best for UK Collectors in 2026?

PSA, CGC, BGS or ACE for your trading cards? We compare costs, turnaround, resale premiums, and the UK-specific advantages of ACE Grading - so you choose the right service first time.

If you have got a card that might be worth grading, you have probably already realised the decision is not as simple as 'send it off and wait'. There are now four major grading services UK collectors actively use - PSA, CGC, BGS, and ACE - and the one you choose can make a difference of hundreds (sometimes thousands) of pounds in the final resale value of your card.

For UK collectors, the decision used to be uniformly painful - international shipping, customs, VAT on return, turnaround times stretching into months. That has changed in the last few years, largely because of one company: ACE Grading, a UK-based service that has rapidly become a serious player domestically.

We grade cards regularly at Summoners Vault and have used all four services across different submissions. Here is our honest breakdown of which to use, when, and why - written specifically for UK collectors in 2026.

Why Grade Cards at All?

Before we get into the service comparison, the short version of why grading matters:

· Authenticity guarantee - graded cards are verified genuine, which removes a major buyer concern

· Condition protection - the sealed slab protects the card permanently from handling damage

· Price premium - a top grade often sells for 3-10x the value of a raw near-mint card

· Liquidity - graded cards sell faster on eBay and dedicated marketplaces because buyers trust the grade

If a card is worth less than about £80 raw, the cost of grading rarely makes sense. If a card is worth more than that, grading almost always pays off - provided the card grades well.

The Four Major Grading Services in 2026

PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator)

PSA is the dominant grading service globally and the one most international buyers default to.

Strengths:

· Highest resale premium globally - PSA graded cards consistently sell for more than equivalent grades from other services on international marketplaces

· Most recognised slab in the hobby - buyers trust PSA without question

· Strong pop report data - you can see exactly how many copies of each grade exist

· PSA UK now exists - submissions can be sent through their UK partner without shipping internationally yourself

Weaknesses:

· Slower turnaround than competitors - typical UK route takes 2-4 months

· More expensive at most service tiers

· Backlog and pricing changes happen frequently

Best for: Pokemon, vintage cards, anything you plan to sell to a global audience, and any card worth £150+ raw where international resale value matters.

ACE Grading (UK)

ACE is the UK-based grading service that has rapidly grown into the default choice for many UK collectors. Founded specifically to address the pain points UK submitters had with US services, ACE has built genuine credibility in the British market.

Strengths:

· UK-based - no international shipping, no customs, no VAT shocks on return. Cards stay in the country the entire time.

· Fast turnaround - typically 4-6 weeks for standard service, sometimes quicker

· Significantly cheaper than international alternatives for UK collectors

· Strong and growing UK collector community recognition - especially for Pokemon

· Excellent customer service and direct communication

Weaknesses:

· Lower international resale recognition - if your buyer is in the US, they may not know ACE

· Resale premium below PSA for high-value cards, particularly outside the UK market

· Smaller pop report data set - fewer reference points for population scarcity

Best for: UK-to-UK resales, modern Pokemon, Riftbound, Lorcana, One Piece, and any card where avoiding international shipping headaches is worth more than the marginal international resale premium. For cards selling primarily into the UK collector market, ACE is increasingly the smart default.

CGC (Certified Guaranty Company)

CGC was historically a comics grader and has aggressively expanded into trading cards over the past five years. Credible reputation, especially for modern TCGs.

Strengths:

· Faster turnaround than PSA - often 4-8 weeks for standard tier

· Cheaper than PSA across most price tiers

· Excellent subgrade transparency - they show centring, corners, edges, surface separately

· Strong presence for Lorcana, One Piece, and newer TCGs where they were early movers

Weaknesses:

· Resale premium is consistently below PSA - often by 15-30% on equivalent grades

· Smaller pop report data set for some games

· Less recognised by casual buyers

Best for: Newer TCGs (Lorcana, One Piece, Riftbound) where you want a globally recognised slab without paying PSA's premium, and modern Pokemon if you need faster turnaround than PSA offers.

BGS (Beckett Grading Services)

BGS is the most rigorous of the four. A Beckett 'Black Label' (10 across all subgrades) is the gold standard in the hobby - rarer than a PSA 10 by a wide margin.

Strengths:

· Most rigorous grading - a BGS 9.5 is genuinely harder to achieve than a PSA 10 in many cases

· Subgrades shown on the slab itself (centring, corners, edges, surface)

· Black Label cards (10/10/10/10) command massive premiums - sometimes 5-10x equivalent grades

Weaknesses:

· Slowest turnaround of the four - often 3-6 months

· Lower base resale premium than PSA for non-Black Label grades

· Less common for TCGs - more historically associated with sports cards

Best for: Vintage cards where you are confident in a near-perfect grade, sports cards, and chasing Black Label status on truly pristine cards.

Cost and Turnaround Comparison

Rough 2026 figures for standard service tiers (excluding shipping, insurance, and any UK VAT on return for international services):

· ACE Standard tier: £15-£20 per card, 4-6 week turnaround, no customs/VAT

· CGC Standard tier: £20-£25 per card, 30-60 day turnaround, plus international shipping/VAT

· PSA Value tier: £25-£35 per card, 60-90 day turnaround, plus shipping (UK partner available)

· BGS Standard tier: £30-£40 per card, 90-180 day turnaround, plus international shipping/VAT

Express and premium tiers are available across all services but typically cost 2-5x the standard rate. Only worth it for very high-value cards or time-sensitive resales.

For UK collectors, ACE wins decisively on combined cost and time. The question is whether the international resale premium of PSA/CGC justifies the additional cost and wait.

Which Service Holds Most Value?

This is the honest answer most articles will not give you straight: PSA holds the highest global resale value across most categories. For comparable grades on the same card, PSA typically sells for 20-40% more than CGC, 10-25% more than BGS (excluding Black Label), and 15-30% more than ACE on the global market.

However, within the UK collector market specifically, the gap is narrower - and shrinking. ACE has built genuine credibility with UK buyers, and for cards sold UK-to-UK, the premium difference between ACE and PSA is often small enough that the cost and time savings of ACE outweigh the resale premium of PSA.

The practical breakdown:

· Selling globally (eBay international, US collectors): PSA wins, comfortably

· Selling UK-only (Facebook groups, UK marketplaces, in-person events): ACE is increasingly competitive

· Modern Pokemon for serious investment hold: PSA

· Modern Pokemon for UK resale within 1-2 years: ACE makes more sense

· Riftbound, Lorcana, One Piece for UK market: ACE or CGC - market preference is still forming

UK-Specific Considerations

Grading from the UK has historically been painful. ACE has changed that landscape significantly. Here is what to be aware of:

Shipping internationally (PSA/CGC/BGS): If you are submitting directly to a US grading service, you need tracked, insured international shipping both ways. Insurance for cards worth £500+ can run £30-£80 round trip. Always use signed-for tracking.

UK VAT on return: When your graded cards come back into the UK from US services, they may attract VAT and a customs handling fee depending on declared value. This is the single biggest cost surprise UK collectors hit. Plan for an additional 20-25% on top of declared value when budgeting.

ACE eliminates these issues entirely. Cards never leave the UK, so there is no customs, no VAT, no international shipping risk, and no insurance markup on transatlantic transit. This is the structural advantage ACE has built its business on.

Use UK submission centres where possible: Both PSA and CGC have UK-based submission options through authorised partners. These typically charge a small handling fee but eliminate the round-trip shipping and customs headaches.

Group submissions: If you have multiple cards to grade, sending them together drops your per-card cost significantly. Many UK collectors organise group submissions through Facebook groups or hobby Discords.

When NOT to Grade

· Cards worth under £80 raw - the grading fee will not pay for itself unless the card has serious upside (lower threshold for ACE - around £50)

· Cards with visible defects (whitening, edge wear, surface scratches) - you will get a low grade and the slab adds no value

· Cards from low-demand sets or formats - even high grades will not generate resale interest

· Cards you are planning to keep forever in a binder - grading is for resale liquidity, not personal collection

· Cards where the population report is already saturated with high grades - the premium has been absorbed by supply

Our Verdict

· PSA is the default for serious global resale - highest international premium, broadest buyer recognition

· ACE is the smart UK collector default for cards under £500 or for any submission where time and cost matter as much as resale premium

· CGC is the right pick for modern TCGs (Lorcana, Riftbound, One Piece) where you want a globally recognised slab without paying PSA prices

· BGS is worth using only when you are chasing Black Label on a near-perfect card

· For UK-to-UK resale, ACE is increasingly the rational choice - the gap to PSA has narrowed significantly

· For global resale (US/Asia buyers), PSA still wins

· Do not grade anything worth less than £50 raw

· Always insure shipments - cards get lost more often than you would think

· Budget for VAT on return if shipping internationally
